First-time builder? Introducing the Construction Doula 

My first house build project 11 years ago verged on the disastrous - from the time a contractor hit a gas line, through cost overruns and project delays, to tough compromises and near-fisticuffs.​

​

When I built my second house we expected a smoother ride, given all the lessons we’d learned. We didn’t get it - we just made a whole new set of mistakes.​​​​​

Throughout, my wife and I faced a barrage of decisions with no prior experience or context to frame them. It quickly became clear why my real estate attorney had warned that one of the biggest risks in construction is divorce.

 

But I've no regrets (apart from the near fisticuffs, obviously). I've kept building, and created beautiful homes with unique touches that buyers have fallen in love with.

 

I've now turned eleven years of experiences - along with lessons shared by other homeowners, architects and contractors - into tools and services for first-time builders and large-scale remodelers, providing the support I wished I'd had when I started out.

My Construction Doula Services

Prepare 

Workshops to:

  • Agree goals, Wishlist & Design Principles 

  • Assess cost parameters and high-level budget 

  • Analyze risks and potential mitigation

  • Discuss strategies for managing build 

  • Find and purchase site (I'm a Realtor)

Partner

Use my proprietary tools to help you select your: 

  • Architect

  • General Contractor

  • Interior Designer 

  • Other professionals

  • Specialist contractors (e.g. tiler, fabricator, cabinet maker etc)

Design

  • Liaise with City departments e.g. planning & building

  • Sketch initial design concepts

  • Provide creative input and second set of eyes during design process

  • Help select materials and finishes​​​​

Build

  • Help finalizing and monitoring budget ​

  • Monitor owner's responsibilities to reduce risk of project delays

  • Help assess safeguards e.g. extra inspections 

  • Sounding board during construction, with relevant referrals
